Eintracht Braunschweig Defeats Hannover 96 in Lower Saxony Derby
Eintracht Braunschweig secured a 2-0 victory over rival Hannover 96, though the match was marred by late fan disturbances.
Eintracht Braunschweig defeated rival Hannover 96 2-0 in the 185th Lower Saxony derby in the 2. Bundesliga, securing its first derby win in two years. Played in front of 22,073 spectators at the Eintracht-Stadion, the high-risk fixture saw Max Marie open the scoring in the 17th minute before Yann Sturm sealed the victory with a second goal in stoppage time.
The win allowed Braunschweig to move up into the middle of the table, bringing relief to the team and coach Lars Kornetka. Conversely, Hannover 96 remains deep in the relegation battle, sitting in 16th place after nine matchdays following a difficult start under new head coach Sandro Wagner.
The match was nearly overshadowed by severe fan unrest near the end of the game. Following Braunschweig's second goal, flares and pyrotechnics were launched from the Hannover supporters' block toward the pitch and neighboring spectator sections, forcing the fire department to extinguish small blazes.
Referee Tobias Reichel was forced to halt the match for ten minutes due to the security incident. A police spokesperson noted that while the rest of the security operation had remained quiet, these final actions negatively impacted the overall assessment of the high-risk event.
Hannover 96 issued a strong statement condemning the actions of its supporters, describing the incident as an unacceptable escalation. "These are scenes that Hannover 96 condemns in the strongest possible terms and for which there is no excuse whatsoever," the club stated, adding that it will actively work to identify the perpetrators who knowingly endangered the health of others.
Hannover's sporting director Jonas Boldt criticized the disruption during an interview with Sky, stating, "This is completely unnecessary. We do not need something like that in a football stadium. There is nothing more to say about it." Coach Sandro Wagner reiterated his stance against violence, noting that his side's performance on the pitch also fell short of expectations.
The victory for Braunschweig also came with a concerning physical toll. Goalkeeper and team captain Ron-Thorben Hoffmann had to be escorted off the field looking dazed following a defensive clearance and was subsequently taken to the hospital for evaluation, with Benjamin Uphoff stepping in as his replacement.
Ahead of the match, security had been a primary focus for authorities, with a massive police presence deployed and 1,900 Hannover fans transported via a special train. Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens had previously warned both fan bases that further disturbances could lead to stricter measures, such as personalized ticketing, reduced away allocations, or even matches played behind closed doors.
