Head coach René Wagner of 1. FC Cologne is facing mounting pressure as his team prepares for a crucial double-header against Union Berlin. While club management has publicly maintained its support for the 38-year-old manager, upcoming fixtures in both the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga will likely prove pivotal for his tenure.

The scrutiny intensified following a disappointing scoreless draw against FC Schalke 04 over the weekend. Although Cologne secured an emotional 2:1 derby victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach just two weeks prior, the lackluster offensive performance against Schalke prompted some frustrated supporters to voice loud chants calling for Wagner's dismissal.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's cup match, Wagner admitted that the negative reactions from the stands deeply affected him. "Directly after the match and also the day after, it naturally hits you personally. I think I've been in the club long enough now. It's not easy," Wagner remarked during a press conference, adding that waking up the next morning with a heavy heart after disappointing the supporters was a difficult experience.

Sporting director Thomas Kessler addressed the team's current situation by confirming that the coach retains full backing from the club hierarchy for the time being. However, Kessler also emphasized the immediate necessity for positive results, noting that success is the primary currency that builds trust among fans and management alike.

Kessler described the upcoming encounters with Union Berlin as critically important for the squad, which currently sits in twelfth place in the Bundesliga standings. Following the two matches against Union, Cologne will face formidable tests against Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, raising the stakes even higher for Wagner and his players.

Criticism of the team's stagnant attacking play has not been limited to the supporters. Former club star Pierre Littbarski publicly questioned some of Wagner's tactical decisions during the Schalke match via social media, specifically criticizing the substitution of offensive players.

Wagner acknowledged the ongoing struggles in the attacking third, noting that the team is currently missing both of its primary center forwards due to injuries. While Thijs Dallinga remains sidelined, striker Ragnar Ache has returned to training following a muscle injury, and a late decision will determine whether he can make his comeback during the cup fixture.

Looking ahead to the upcoming matches, Wagner stressed the importance of displaying renewed determination and a clear hunger to score goals. The squad has reviewed the weekend performance and put it behind them, with the coach expressing hope that the demanding schedule will help the team maintain its focus on the pitch.
