FC Porto Defeats Napoli 4-1 in Champions League as Santiago Giménez Shines
The Mexican striker provided a crucial assist after coming off the bench to help secure Porto's first victory in the European tournament.
FC Porto claimed a dominant 4-1 victory against Napoli at the Estadio do Dragao during the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League. The Portuguese side broke through in the second half with a flurry of goals to secure their first win of the European campaign, moving past their initial struggles in the tournament.
The hosts opened the scoring early in the match when Jan Bednarek connected on a header from a corner kick delivered by Gabri Veiga in the 11th minute. Porto maintained pressure throughout the opening period, but Napoli managed to equalize right before halftime when Scott McTominay capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area in the 43rd minute, sending the teams into the break tied at one.
The second half belonged entirely to Porto under manager Francesco Farioli. The hosts mounted heavy pressure on the Italian defense, creating multiple scoring chances before breaking the deadlock in the 71st minute through a swift counterattack.
Mexican forward Santiago Giménez entered the match as a substitute in the 67th minute, replacing Borja Sainz, and quickly made a decisive impact. Giménez received a pass on the break and delivered an accurate assist to Gabri Veiga, who slotted home past the Napoli goalkeeper to restore Porto's lead at 2-1.
Porto continued to press their advantage in the closing stages. Jakub Kiwior extended the lead to 3-1 in the 80th minute by heading in another corner kick. Moments later, Napoli's difficulties compounded when defender Rafa Marín received a red card for a foul inside the box against Samu Aghehowa, who subsequently converted the resulting penalty in the 90th minute to cap off the 4-1 scoreline.
Following the match, Santiago Giménez addressed media reports regarding his personal life and on-field form, firmly dismissing rumors that he was experiencing psychological difficulties. Speaking with reporters, the forward expressed enthusiasm for his new chapter in Portuguese football and his adaptation to a right-winger role under Farioli.
"The group in Porto is hermoso. Both the technical staff and the players have an important union and the truth is I am very happy. Then they put out that I have psychological problems, but that is false, I really am enjoying it to the maximum," Giménez stated. The Mexican international emphasized that he feels no pressure and remains confident that his goalscoring output will follow as he continues to adapt to the squad.
