Germany Raises Military Threat Level Following Explosive Drone Discovery
The Bundeswehr elevated its internal sabotage threat classification to significant after authorities linked a discovered drone to potential Russian operations.
The German military has elevated its internal sabotage threat classification to "significant" for the first time, establishing the second-highest level on its scale. The adjustment comes in response to growing concerns over potential Russian attacks targeting soldiers and defense installations across the country.
The updated assessment stems from an internal military report reviewed by media outlets including WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung. A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense confirmed the evaluation, noting that security and protection measures at military establishments are currently being reviewed and adjusted based on local requirements.
A primary catalyst for the heightened alert was the discovery of a crashed drone laden with high explosives near the Wunstorf air base in Lower Saxony. Investigators believe the device, which technical analysis from the Federal Criminal Police Office suggests had been at the location for roughly two years, was intended to target German military aircraft.
Investigators also noted similarities between the Wunstorf drone and a device utilized in an attempted attack against the Leipzig/Halle airport in early August. While the Leipzig incident focused on civil cargo aircraft, the threat in Wunstorf was directed at Bundeswehr assets.
According to the military evaluation, the deployment of armed drones introduces a severe threat capable of producing lethal consequences and material damage that surpasses previously anticipated scenarios. The report indicates that Moscow aims to weaken domestic political support for Ukraine and disrupt the transit of military equipment and training programs for Ukrainian forces.
German military authorities have contributed significantly to training efforts since 2022, preparing tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops under the European Union military assistance mission. Beyond the Wunstorf and Leipzig incidents, the internal documents highlight multiple suspicious reconnaissance activities, including unauthorized drone flights over the Arrow 3 missile defense system site in Saxony-Anhalt and a concealed camera monitoring a strategic railway station in Minden.
German security services anticipate that the security climate could deteriorate in the short term, prompting officials to reinforce defensive measures with increased patrols and advanced technical surveillance equipment across critical defense infrastructure.
