Gladiator II Reaches No. 1 on Netflix Following Box Office Run
Ridley Scott's historical sequel climbs to the top of the streaming charts in the United States after a box office performance that fell short of expectations.
The historical epic Gladiator II has claimed the No. 1 position on Netflix’s movie chart in the United States. Directed by Ridley Scott, the action-packed sequel arrived on the streaming platform and quickly captured audience attention, bringing renewed focus to the film months after its theatrical debut.
Despite its current streaming popularity, the film experienced an underwhelming run in theaters. Produced on a reported budget of $250 million, Gladiator II grossed more than $462 million worldwide. That global total included over $172 million domestically and nearly $290 million from international markets, failing to meet the high financial expectations set for its theatrical release.
Set in 209 AD, the narrative follows Lucius Verus Aurelius, portrayed by Paul Mescal. The character’s life is completely upended after Roman forces seize his home, forcing him into slavery as a gladiator known as Hanno. Immersed in the brutal environment of the Colosseum, Lucius must navigate the dangerous political landscape of Rome under the rule of Emperors Caracalla and Geta.
The star-studded cast features Denzel Washington as Macrinus, Pedro Pascal as Acacius, Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Lucilla, Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, and Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla. The story serves as a direct continuation of the original 2000 film Gladiator, which starred Russell Crowe.
During its time in theaters, the movie earned generally positive reviews from professional critics. It holds a 70 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences offered an even more favorable reception with an 80 percent score on the platform.
The swift transition to the streaming chart's top spot demonstrates a strong renewed interest from home viewers. As subscribers continue to stream the epic drama, the film has found a second life and a much larger audience following its mixed theatrical journey.
