Actor Keanu Reeves is officially attached to headline the upcoming Netflix action movie Maelstrom, stepping into the lead role after Reacher star Alan Ritchson stepped down from the project. Jaume Collet-Serra, known for directing Carry-On, remains attached to helm the feature.

The narrative of Maelstrom unfolds over the course of a single evening as a powerful hurricane makes landfall. The story follows a Federal Marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer seeking witness protection ahead of her testimony. As the storm cuts off outside communication and prevents any reinforcements from arriving, the pair must fight off a relentless wave of henchmen sent by the arms dealer while simultaneously surviving the severe natural disaster.

While Reeves is stepping in to lead the feature, no official reason has been provided regarding Ritchson's departure from the production. Ritchson remains involved with Netflix through other ventures, including projects like War Machine and an upcoming MotoGP thriller.

The screenplay for Maelstrom has undergone a lengthy development process spanning decades. The project was originally acquired as a spec script by Warner Bros. in 1993, during a period when Hollywood studios actively sought high-concept action pictures in the vein of the 1988 classic Die Hard. At the time, the script was purchased for a sum equivalent to roughly $225,000 to $625,000, which translates to about $500,000 to $1.4 million when adjusted for inflation over 33 years.

The revived film is being produced by Jeff Robinov, the former Warner Bros. Pictures president who previously oversaw multi-billion-dollar franchises such as The Dark Knight trilogy and The Hangover. Maelstrom marks the first major title stemming from Robinov's new creative deal with Netflix.

The script received a fresh polish from screenwriter Mark Bianculli, who took over from the first draft written by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick. Bianculli previously penned an upcoming remake of the 1993 Sylvester Stallone film Cliffhanger, which is also directed by Collet-Serra.

Netflix has experienced notable success in reviving dormant high-concept scripts. The streamer previously rescued Carry-On after it sat unproduced for over a decade, turning it into one of its most-viewed original films under the direction of Collet-Serra. Executives hope to replicate that success with Maelstrom, though a formal release date has not yet been announced by the platform.
