Hayden Panettiere's Death Ruled Accidental as Police Close Investigation
Authorities in South Carolina confirmed the 36-year-old actress died of an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and prescription drugs.
The Greenville Police Department in South Carolina has officially closed its investigation into the death of actress and singer Hayden Panettiere, confirming that her passing was accidental. The decision follows the final determinations of the local coroner's office regarding the 36-year-old star, who died on August 16 after consuming a fatal mixture of fentanyl and prescription medications. Law enforcement officials announced that their inquiry has ended and no criminal charges have been filed.
Emergency responders initially arrived at a temporary rental apartment located in the Judson Mill Lofts complex in Greenville around 1:51 p.m. on August 16. Authorities had received an emergency call reporting an unresponsive woman experiencing cardiac arrest. Medical personnel administered advanced life-support procedures upon their arrival, but their efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. Panettiere was officially pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m., according to records from the coroner's office.
At the time emergency services reached the residence, Panettiere's boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, were present at the scene. During the subsequent investigation into the circumstances of the overdose, Hickerson spoke directly with local detectives regarding individuals who might have provided the illicit and prescription substances to the actress.
The Greenville County Coroner's Office released its autopsy and toxicology findings in September, attributing the death to the combined toxic effects of five distinct substances. Examiners detected fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam—the generic name for the sedative Xanax—the muscle relaxant methocarbamol, and quetiapine, an antipsychotic medication commonly prescribed for depression and schizophrenia. The medical examination confirmed that there were no signs of physical trauma that contributed to her death.
During their search of the rental property, investigators uncovered critical physical evidence linked to the fatal overdose. According to coroner documents, authorities located a container labeled as Adderall that held a plastic bag filled with pressed blue pills. Rapid testing conducted at the location confirmed that both these counterfeit tablets and a nearby cut drinking straw tested positive for the presence of fentanyl. Subsequent reports indicated the fatal dose may have involved a counterfeit oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl obtained through a supplier.
While local detectives concluded that the overdose was accidental and formally ended municipal proceedings, questions remain regarding federal inquiries. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration had previously intervened in parallel inquiries surrounding the drug supply. Greenville police spokesperson Diana Munoz stated that local authorities could not comment on the active status or findings of other law enforcement bodies, leaving the DEA's standing on the matter unclarified.
The actress's father, Skip Panettiere, publicly shared the family's grief shortly after her passing, describing her loss as an overwhelming tragedy. In a statement released through national media, he remembered his daughter as an extraordinary presence who brought immeasurable joy and affection to family members and audience members worldwide. The announcement prompted an outpouring of tributes across the entertainment industry.
Panettiere built an extensive acting career that began during childhood before transitioning into high-profile television and film projects. She achieved international recognition for her portrayal of the indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on the hit science-fiction series "Heroes." She later received critical acclaim and two Golden Globe nominations for her starring role as country superstar Juliette Barnes on the musical drama series "Nashville," appearing across 128 episodes between 2012 and 2018.
