Hoffenheim Tops Lyon While OM Struggles in European Play
German side Hoffenheim secures a comfortable 3-0 victory over Lyon in the Europa League, whereas Olympique de Marseille falls to Sturm Graz.
TSG Hoffenheim claimed its first points in the Europa League with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Ligue 1 leaders Lyon. Under the guidance of Christian Ilzer, the German side ended Lyon's flawless start in the competition following goals from Andrej Kramarić, Adam Daghim, and Adam Hložek.
The opening half hour saw Hoffenheim create the best scoring opportunities, testing Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif before a lengthy medical stoppage led to eight minutes of injury time. Shortly before the half-time whistle, 35-year-old forward Andrej Kramarić broke the deadlock by capitalizing on a loose ball following a long throw-in, scoring his first European goal since the 2020-21 campaign.
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca attempted to alter the momentum at halftime by introducing Tyler Morton and Moussa Niakhaté, but Hoffenheim doubled its lead within the first five minutes of the second half. Kramarić provided the assist for Adam Daghim to score his first European goal for the club, before substitute Adam Hložek secured the final scoreline late in the match.
While Hoffenheim celebrates its breakthrough win, the club prepares to host Bayer Leverkusen in domestic action before visiting reigning Conference League champions Crystal Palace in Europe. Meanwhile, Lyon remains near the top of the French domestic standings despite the European setback.
In contrast to Hoffenheim's success, Olympique de Marseille endured another difficult evening on the continental stage, suffering a 1-0 defeat against Sturm Graz in Austria. Bruno Genesio's side conceded a 13th-minute goal to Oumar Diakité and failed to mount a significant comeback, marking their third consecutive loss in the competition without a single point.
Despite dominating possession with roughly 70 percent control of the ball, Marseille struggled to create clear-cut scoring chances and registered their first shot on target in the 70th minute through a curved effort from Paixao. Speaking after the match, team captain Geoffrey Kondogbia emphasized the need for immediate improvement. "We have to think about getting points first, we cannot look any further ahead," Kondogbia stated, adding that the squad must learn to convert their opportunities at the highest level.
Elsewhere in European competitions, Trabzonspor secured a 2-0 victory over Hearts in the UEFA Europa Conference League, led by a penalty and an assist from Egyptian star Mohamed Salah. The Turkish side climbed to six points in the standings, while other matches in the tournament saw Brighton draw 0-0 with Jablonec and Panathinaïkos defeat Kairat Almaty 5-1.
