Inter Milan Secures Convincing 3-0 Victory Over Feyenoord in Champions League
Djed Spence leads the Italian side to a crucial win in Rotterdam, helping them bounce back from recent domestic struggles.
Inter Milan secured a dominant 3-0 victory against Feyenoord at Stadion Feijenoord on Tuesday, marking a significant recovery for the Italian champions in the UEFA Champions League. The win provides a much-needed boost for the visitors, who entered the match following a disappointing 3-1 loss to AC Milan in the Serie A derby last weekend.
The match began with early intensity from Inter, as Yann Bisseck opened the scoring just eight minutes into the contest. Bisseck delivered a precise, curling strike from the edge of the penalty area, set up by a creative play from Djed Spence. The England full-back, who joined Inter from Tottenham in August, proved instrumental throughout the evening, consistently pressuring the Dutch defense.
Inter extended their lead in the 34th minute when Pio Esposito capitalized on a deflected shot from Spence, heading the ball into the net from close range. Despite a later effort from Esposito being disallowed for offside, Inter maintained control. Piotr Zielinski added the final goal of the night, maneuvering through the Feyenoord box before firing a strike past goalkeeper Tjark Ernst to seal the result.
For Feyenoord, the defeat leaves the team in a difficult position within the league phase standings. Currently sitting in 30th place with only three points after four matches, the Rotterdam club faces an uphill battle to qualify for the play-offs. Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst had hoped for a "magical evening" at De Kuip, but the team struggled to contain Inter's transition play and defensive organization.
Prior to the match, Van Bronckhorst noted the importance of the home atmosphere but warned that his side could not afford errors against an experienced opponent. The Feyenoord lineup featured a notable change, with Thijs Kraaijeveld starting in defense alongside Mika Mármol due to a physical concern involving Tsuyoshi Watanabe. Despite the tactical adjustments, the Dutch side was unable to capitalize on the opportunities they created.
Inter forward Marcus Thuram emphasized the importance of the team's mentality heading into the fixture. Addressing media reports regarding internal leadership, Thuram stated, "Everyone expresses themselves in their own way. You can see what Lauti does, but the others contribute a great deal too." He further noted that the team had recognized the need to improve their approach to matches following their recent derby defeat.
With this result, Inter Milan moves to six points in the league phase table, currently sitting in 14th place. The team will look to build on this momentum when they host Stuttgart on November 25. Meanwhile, Feyenoord will attempt to improve their standing in the competition when they welcome Porto to Rotterdam on November 24.
