Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing exit from the CAF Confederation Cup on Friday, October 23, 2026, falling to Zambia's Red Arrows in a penalty shootout at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Despite securing a 1-0 victory in regulation time to level the second-round preliminary tie 1-0 on aggregate, the South African side failed to convert their chances during the ensuing shootout.

Ahead of the decisive clash, Chiefs received a timely boost with the return of experienced goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and midfielder Lebohang Maboe from recent injury layoffs. Head coach Fernando da Cruz made several tactical adjustments to his starting lineup, handing a start to goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma while placing Petersen on the bench, and shifting Reeve Frosler back to right-back.

The visitors arrived in Durban holding a crucial 1-0 advantage from the first leg at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. Red Arrows assistant coach Kalililo Kakonje emphasized the high stakes before the match, stating that the squad understood the responsibility of representing their country and the Zambia Air Force on the continental stage.

After a quiet and scoreless first half that offered little offensive entertainment, Kaizer Chiefs broke the deadlock in the second period. Mfundo Vilakazi delivered an exceptional free-kick into the penalty area, which Bradley Cross met with a powerful header to net his first goal for the club and only the second of his career.

With the aggregate score leveled, Amakhosi pushed for a winning goal during regulation and created several promising scoring opportunities. Mdu Shabalala squandered two clear chances, including a one-on-one opportunity against the opposing goalkeeper, while Asanele Velebayi missed the target from a favorable position as the home team failed to capitalize on a visibly tiring Red Arrows defense.

The missed opportunities came back to haunt the South African giants as the match advanced to penalties. In the shootout, Lebohang Maboe and Ethan Chislett both struck the crossbar, and Reeve Frosler saw his penalty attempt saved by the goalkeeper, sealing a dismal failure for Chiefs.

The elimination prevents Kaizer Chiefs from improving upon their group stage exit from the previous season. History also repeated itself negatively, as Chiefs have now only won one out of nine CAF competition ties after losing the first leg, unable to replicate a similar comeback penalty victory they achieved against Angola's Kabuscorp last year.
