Metropolitan Police Handling of 2019 Thomas Markle Letter Faces Watchdog Review
An independent investigation is underway regarding how British law enforcement handled allegations against Meghan Markle's father in 2019.
An independent police watchdog in the United Kingdom has launched an investigation into the Metropolitan Police's handling of a 2019 letter containing serious allegations against Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. The review follows admissions by Scotland Yard that information sent to authorities was never forwarded to international law enforcement agencies in countries where the alleged offenses were said to have occurred.
According to recent reports, Meghan initially considered speaking publicly about the allegations after learning of them in 2019. However, a member of her royal protection team allegedly persuaded her to remain silent, assuring her that the matter would be investigated. The officer reportedly told her to leave the matter with them.
The Duchess of Sussex stated that she believed appropriate authorities were handling the claims and trusted them to investigate. In a statement addressing the controversy, Meghan explained that her ongoing distance from her father and her decision to keep him away from Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet were solely to protect her children.
The disputed allegations first came to light via a letter sent to Scotland Yard by Roslyn Loveless, Thomas Sr.'s first wife. The correspondence was subsequently handed over to Meghan and Prince Harry through their security detail. Reports indicate that senior palace figures, including former aides Samantha Cohen and Jason Knauf, were unaware of the accusations at the time, keeping the information largely confined to the royal couple and their protection detail.
The Metropolitan Police made a voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following a review of previous decisions. On October 30, the IOPC confirmed that an independent inquiry was necessary to examine police conduct and decision-making regarding the failure to forward the allegations of serious offending to overseas authorities. The watchdog's review focuses strictly on police actions rather than determining guilt.
Meanwhile, Thomas Markle Sr. faces separate investigations abroad. Authorities in the Philippines are examining separate claims involving material reportedly found among his belongings at a former residence in Cebu, while law enforcement in Mexico has searched a storage unit previously rented by him. Thomas Sr., who has consistently denied all wrongdoing and described the accusations as sick lies, has been receiving medical care in Florida.
