One Dead and Four Injured in Shooting Spree Across French Towns
The French national counterterrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation following a drive-by shooting in Trappes and La Verrière.
A shooting rampage in the French towns of Trappes and La Verrière left one person dead and four others injured on Friday morning, prompting the national counterterrorism prosecutor to take over the investigation. The suspect, identified as a 39-year-old man, opened fire from a gray Renault Clio using an automatic weapon before being swiftly apprehended by anti-crime brigade police officers in nearby Coignières.
The sequence of events began at approximately 10:30 a.m. when the gunman drove through multiple neighborhoods, firing shots indiscriminately at various targets, including a service station, a health center, and a playground. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, stated that the perpetrator clearly wanted to cause a massacre, noting that it was a miracle there were not more casualties. A 26-year-old man was killed during the attacks, and four others sustained injuries.
Among the injured is a 12-year-old girl who was struck multiple times and transported to a hospital in Paris. Officials later reported that her medical condition had stabilized. Two other men, aged 29 and 49, were also targeted and hospitalized, though their lives were not in danger. Law enforcement authorities searched the suspect's vehicle, where they reportedly recovered an automatic submachine gun, tear gas canisters, and gloves, alongside narcotics.
The National Antiterrorism Prosecutor's Office announced it has opened an investigation into charges of murder and attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise. The inquiry also encompasses the aggravating circumstance that the acts were allegedly committed based on the actual or supposed membership of the victims in a determined race, ethnicity, nation, or religion, as well as unauthorized possession of a category A weapon and terrorist conspiracy.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez traveled to the scene alongside Minister for Equality Aurore Bergé and described the incident as a terrorist crime. He praised the rapid intervention of the five police officers who intercepted the suspect roughly a quarter of an hour after the rampage began, effectively halting the attack. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that the suspect was in police custody and emphasized that all security and judicial resources were fully mobilized.
Local officials and community leaders expressed profound shock and concern over the climate of fear gripping the area. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh characterized the shooting as an attack bearing racist and potentially Islamophobic connotations, pointing out that the deceased victim was of African descent and that individuals facing severe injuries belonged to minority backgrounds. He called for civil concord and vigilance against ideologies that foster violence.
President Emmanuel Macron addressed the tragedy on social media, assuring residents and victims' families that the nation stands by their side through this terrible ordeal. Meanwhile, specialized security teams, including the RAID and bomb disposal units, conducted a search at the suspect's residence in Plaisir as investigators work to determine his precise motives and whether he acted with accomplices.
