Racist Terrorist Attack Leaves One Dead and Five Injured in Yvelines
French authorities launched a counter-terrorism investigation after a gunman targeted multiple victims in Trappes and La Verrière.
A shooting rampage in the Yvelines department on Friday morning left one person dead and five others seriously injured, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement and counter-terrorism officials. The violent series of events unfolded in the communes of Trappes and La Verrière, where a lone driver opened fire from a vehicle using a submachine gun. The suspect, identified by authorities as 39-year-old Kévin T., was swiftly apprehended by anti-crime brigade police officers on National Route 10 in the nearby town of Coignières shortly after the attacks.
The National Antiterrorist Prosecutor's Office announced it was taking charge of the investigation, opening a judicial inquiry for assassination and attempted assassination linked to a terrorist enterprise. The prosecutor noted that the offenses were committed based on the true or supposed membership of the victims in a determined race, ethnicity, nation, or religion. Investigators revealed that the suspect's residence in Plaisir was found to be booby-trapped with three gas cylinders connected to electrical wires and a timer, prompting security precautions during the search.
According to local officials, the violence resulted in multiple casualties across both municipalities. In Trappes, a 26-year-old man of African origin was shot and killed near a playground while visiting family. A 20-year-old person of North African descent sustained critical injuries, and a 41-year-old woman was also hospitalized. In the neighboring town of La Verrière, two cleaning workers aged 29 and 47 were targeted outside a school before the gunman continued his assault, severely wounding a 12-year-old girl who was struck by eight bullets. Hospital officials later reported that the young girl's condition had stabilized.
President Emmanuel Macron traveled to Trappes later in the day to meet with local leaders, emergency responders, and residents, describing the tragedy as a turning point for the nation. "What happened is a turning point in the life of our Republic and our Nation," Macron stated, emphasizing that the victims were targeted on the basis of a racist ideology and their presumed skin color or religion. Interior Ministry and police officials also condemned the assault, characterizing it as a terrorist crime driven by racial animus.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh strongly denounced the shooting, categorizing it publicly as a racist and likely Islamophobic terrorist attack. He stressed the heavy emotional toll the incident has taken on the community and urged civil concord, warning against hateful rhetoric in public discourse. Other political figures across the political spectrum expressed shock and solidarity with the victims and their families, while emergency medical and psychological support units were established in the local town halls to assist witnesses and affected residents.
Investigators and law enforcement sources indicated that the suspect had no prior record with territorial intelligence agencies, though he possessed a judicial record for minor offenses involving narcotics, theft, and driving under the influence. A close family member of the suspect was placed in police custody as authorities worked to uncover the full background and motivations behind the attack. Toxicological analyses were also ordered to determine the suspect's condition at the time of the shootings.
