Racist Terrorist Attack in France Leaves One Dead and Five Injured
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the shooting rampage across the Yvelines department as a racist terrorist attack.
A shooting rampage in the Yvelines department of France left one person dead and five others injured on Friday morning. The suspect, a 39-year-old man, allegedly targeted individuals of immigrant background by firing a submachine gun from a moving vehicle in the towns of La Verrière and Trappes.
Among the five injured is a 12-year-old girl who sustained eight bullet impacts and is currently in critical condition. French President Emmanuel Macron formally classified the incident as a racist terrorist attack.
Nicolas Dainville, the mayor of La Verrière, described the event as a moment of profound terror. He noted that residents expressed deep concern over the cold-blooded nature of the assailant, who reportedly attempted to shoot a municipal police officer who responded to the scene first.
According to the mayor, the responding police officer collected more than a dozen shell casings, highlighting the severity of the violence. Psychological support centers were immediately established in the town halls of La Verrière and Trappes to assist traumatized residents and municipal agents, with counseling services extended through Saturday.
The National Antiterrorism Prosecutor's Office has taken charge of the investigation. Authorities arrested the 39-year-old suspect following the morning attacks, which also drew statements from local leaders regarding the immense emotional impact on the community.
Meanwhile, the broader security climate in France remains tense. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated on Friday in Limoges that the national threat level remains high ahead of upcoming demonstrations. He specifically highlighted concerns regarding violent fringe groups and delinquency taking advantage of civil unrest.
The prime minister assured the public that law enforcement agencies have adjusted their security deployment following previous disturbances, ensuring a more adaptable response to protect citizens and maintain public order.
