Mass Shooting in Yvelines Leaves One Dead and Five Injured
French authorities investigate a racially motivated terrorist attack after an automatic weapon shooting struck Trappes and La Verrière.
A shooting rampage in the Yvelines department of France left one person dead and five others injured on Friday morning. The violent series of events unfolded across the communes of Trappes and La Verrière, prompting an immediate mobilization of law enforcement and national security officials.
French President Emmanuel Macron visited Trappes on Friday evening and strongly condemned the incident. During his visit, Macron declared that the event marks a turning point for the nation, labeling it a racist terrorist attack targeting victims based on their perceived skin color or religion.
According to the National Antiterrorism Prosecutor's Office, the 39-year-old suspect was apprehended by police following a rapid intervention. Authorities discovered that the suspect's residence in Plaisir was booby-trapped with gas cylinders, which led to the evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood and the deployment of specialized urban violence units.
The lone gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon during the morning hours, striking multiple individuals. Among the deceased was a 26-year-old amateur mixed martial arts fighter named Pengo Bossio Wangi. Five other people sustained severe injuries, including a 12-year-old girl who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Local leaders expressed profound shock and grief over the violence. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, described the tragedy as a mass casualty attempt rooted in a racist and likely Islamophobic ideology, calling for national unity and civic harmony in the aftermath of the assault.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez and other government officials also traveled to the affected region to oversee the initial response. In response to the collective trauma experienced by the local communities, authorities established psychological support centers in both Trappes and La Verrière to assist grieving residents and witnesses.
The National Antiterrorism Prosecutor's Office has opened a formal investigation into charges of assassination and attempted assassination linked to a terrorist enterprise, aggravated by the fact that the crimes were allegedly committed based on the victims' real or supposed race, ethnicity, nation, or religion. A member of the suspect's immediate family was also taken into police custody as the investigation continues.
