The Buccaneers look to defend their cup credentials on Tuesday night before turning their attention to Saturday's derby.

Orlando Pirates host newly promoted Milford FC on Tuesday evening at the Orlando Amstel Arena in the Carling Knockout round of 16, seeking to defend their cup pedigree and push deeper into tournament play. The 7:00 p.m. matchup places the Soweto giants against an ambitious underdog outfit just days before one of the most prominent fixtures on their calendar, Saturday's high-profile Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

Carrying the weight of a domestic treble and maintaining an undefeated run in the Premier Soccer League this season, Pirates enter the knockout clash as heavy favorites. Despite the looming weekend showdown against Chiefs at FNB Stadium, former Pirates midfielder Hleza Mofedi asserted that the squad must not lose focus on the immediate task at hand, emphasizing that club tradition demands competing aggressively for every piece of silverware.

"Milford are playing good football, but deep down they know what kind of team they are up against today," Mofedi stated, dismissing any suggestion that the coaching staff should hold back key performers for the weekend rivalry. Mofedi highlighted that Pirates possess enough squad depth to field competitive lineups across the league, the CAF Champions League, and domestic tournaments, reiterating that "right at this moment, tonight's game is the important one" for the team to advance.

Milford FC comes into Tuesday's encounter aiming to capitalize on the high-stakes, single-elimination nature of the competition. Under head coach Dr. Xanti Pupuma, the club previously demonstrated its ability to disrupt established powerhouses by eliminating Kaizer Chiefs from the 2024 Nedbank Cup. Midfielder Menzi Chili openly recognized the immense challenge ahead while expressing confidence that Milford can perform without intimidation.

"We are going there as underdogs, no pressure whatsoever, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to go into the next round," Chili said ahead of the match. While acknowledging Pirates as one of the best and most experienced cup sides in Africa, Chili underscored that Milford intend to stick to their standard style of play in hopes of orchestrating a major shock on Tuesday night.

The two sides previously met on the opening day of the league season in August, when Abdeslam Ouaddou's squad secured a disciplined 2-0 victory over Milford despite the lower-tier side utilizing deep defensive blocks and an aggressive offside trap. Pirates leaders remain mindful that complacency represents the biggest hazard in a 90-minute knockout format, especially while managing roster absences that include injuries to players such as Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha.

The clash comes amid broader roster activity surrounding the club. Pirates recently bid farewell to assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi, who departed to take over as head coach at Golden Arrows, a move that former winger Tlou Segolela described as an emotional change for the squad but an earned opportunity for the coach. Additionally, reports suggesting that former Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi had mutually terminated his contract with Bahrain's Al-Khaldiya SC were refuted, with sources confirming he remains active abroad.

Tuesday's result will decisively shape the momentum heading into Saturday's derby. Kaizer Chiefs punched their own ticket to the Carling Knockout quarterfinals on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win against TS Galaxy behind a Wandile Duba hat-trick, prompting Chiefs manager Fernando da Cruz to express growing confidence in his team's tactical model. Pirates now aim to replicate that success against Milford before shifting their complete focus to the weekend battle in Johannesburg.
