Orlando Pirates Host African Stars in CAF Champions League Clash

The Buccaneers carry a narrow lead into the second leg as they look to secure a spot in the group stage.

Orlando Pirates prepare to face Namibian champions African Stars on Friday evening at the Orlando Amstel Arena in the second leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round. The Soweto giants enter the match holding a 1-0 aggregate lead following their victory in Gaborone last weekend, aiming to make amends for missing out on the group phase last season.

African Stars coach Gerald Güther acknowledged the difficult challenge ahead but stressed that his team refuses to be intimidated. Speaking to journalists ahead of the fixture, Güther emphasized the importance of maintaining high concentration levels throughout the entire 90 minutes. He noted that his players learned valuable lessons from their narrow first-leg defeat, highlighting that total focus is essential against a well-organized opponent.

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou stated that his squad owes the fans a strong campaign in Africa's premier club competition after failing to reach the group stage last term. Ouaddou stressed the need for tactical discipline, unity, and full commitment from his players as they look to finish the job at home. Meanwhile, the club confirmed that assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has departed to take up a head coaching position at Golden Arrows in the Premier Soccer League.

Regarding squad updates, Ouaddou addressed questions surrounding striker Sebastian Pedersen, who has experienced a slow start since arriving from Norwegian side Sogndal FC. The coach explained that Pedersen is working hard in training and getting closer to regular action, noting that the player's transition has been partly affected by adjusting to Johannesburg's high altitude of 1,700 meters.

Ouaddou also provided cautious updates on forward Oswin Appollis, who has returned to training after missing the initial encounter due to injury. While Appollis has reported no pain during sprinting drills, the coaching staff intends to manage his recovery carefully to avoid rushing him back into a busy schedule of upcoming fixtures.

With a place in the group stages on the line, African Stars intend to leave everything on the pitch and fight until the final whistle. The match kicks off at 6:00 PM, with the winner advancing further in the continental tournament while the visiting side seeks to overturn the deficit and keep their campaign alive.
