Relebohile Mofokeng Wins House in Wager with Orlando Pirates Chairman
The young forward secured a property of his choice after Orlando Pirates ended a 14-year league title drought, fulfilling a high-stakes bet made during pre-season.
Relebohile Mofokeng secured a house of his choice after winning a R200,000 wager with Orlando Pirates chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza over the club's league title challenge. The agreement was revealed during the season two finale of the Giants documentary, detailing a private meeting that took place in Khoza's office before the start of the campaign.
Prior to the pre-season, the chairman presented Mofokeng with several overseas offers for his services and asked if he wanted to leave. The young attacker declined to rush his departure, asking to remain with the Pirates for one more season. "Before pre-season started, we were in his office and he showed me the offers I had and asked me if I wanted to leave and where I want to go. Then I told him 'I'm not in a rush Mr. Chair' I asked him to give me one more season," Mofokeng said.
According to the player's father, Sechaba, that conversation sparked an unusual and high-pressure agreement. If the Orlando Pirates failed to win the league championship, Mofokeng would be required to pay the chairman R200,000. Conversely, if the Buccaneers successfully captured the trophy and ended their 14-year wait for the league title, Khoza promised to buy the forward any house of his choice.
Mofokeng noted that he was stunned when the terms of the wager were established during the meeting. "He was speechless," Mofokeng stated when recalling the moment the audacious stakes were finalized.
Despite the potential financial reward, Mofokeng explained that his choice to stay was largely influenced by the deep personal mentorship he received from Khoza. He felt a strong sense of gratitude toward the club leader for his guidance through professional and personal development. "He did so much for me in my life and he taught me a lot about life. I think he deserved to get something back," Mofokeng added.
The Orlando Pirates ultimately delivered a historic campaign, capturing the league title and bringing a triumphant end to their long championship drought. The victory guaranteed that Mofokeng won the bet before he eventually departed for Royal Union St. Gilloise.
Sechaba confirmed that Dr. Khoza fully honored the agreement following the conclusion of the season, providing the property as promised. "The house is there, he delivered," Sechaba affirmed, cementing a unique chapter in the history of South African professional football.
