Pumas and Tigres played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City, a result that severely damages both teams' aspirations for postseason play in the Liga MX Apertura 2026 tournament. The match took place during a special commemorative evening celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mexican soccer legend Hugo Sánchez's professional debut with Pumas.

The opening half saw few clear scoring opportunities as both defenses and goalkeepers held firm. Pumas showed more initiative early on, utilizing the movement of attackers César Huerta and Uriel Antuna, while Tigres relied on playmaker Diego Lainez and midfielder Juan Brunetta. Goalkeeper Keylor Navas made important early stops to keep the visitors off the scoreboard, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.

The deadlock broke in the 56th minute when Pumas capitalized on an offensive sequence. Pablo Bennevendo sent a low cross from the flank past the visiting defense to find Robert Morales, who tapped the ball in from close range to give the home side a 1-0 lead. The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters who had filled Ciudad Universitaria.

Despite holding the advantage, Pumas could not secure the victory. Tigres responded after manager changes brought fresh energy to the pitch. In the 76th minute, Guillermo Martínez received a cross and laid the ball back with his heel to Juan Brunetta, who struck a right-footed shot past Navas to tie the match at 1-1.

In the final minutes, Tigres pushed for a winner and nearly secured it. Keylor Navas was forced into crucial late saves, including a stoppage-time block against Brunetta and a fantastic reaction stop on an Ozziel Herrera header following a free kick. The efforts kept the score level until the final whistle.

The solitary point leaves Pumas in 12th place with 17 points, while Tigres sits further back in 14th place with 15 points. With only three regular-season matches remaining, both clubs face an uphill battle to reach the qualification spots for the Liguilla. Pumas manager Esteban Solari acknowledged the team's physical fatigue and ongoing defensive vulnerabilities after the match.

Pumas will travel to face Puebla next, followed by a demanding schedule against Club América and Monterrey. Meanwhile, Tigres will visit Pachuca before hosting América and Cruz Azul as the regular season draws to a close.
