Real Betis Suffers First Champions League Defeat Against Borussia Dortmund

Real Betis suffered its first defeat of the UEFA Champions League campaign after falling 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park. Entering the match with a three-game winning streak in the tournament, Manuel Pellegrini's team battled resiliently but ultimately failed to secure points away from home against the German side.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half when Fabio Silva capitalized on a rebound inside the box after goalkeeper Álvaro Vallés parried a shot from Jobe Bellingham in the 49th minute. The opening goal put the hosts ahead and left the Spanish visitors searching for a response.

Real Betis found an equalizer in the 67th minute through Aitor Ruibal. Following a quick transition, Abde linked up near the area, allowing Ruibal to sweep a first-time shot past the German defense and level the score at 1-1 to energize the traveling supporters.

However, parity lasted for only three minutes. In the 70th minute, Konstantinos Karetsas received a pass at the edge of the box from Fabio Silva, controlled the ball, and unleashed a precise left-footed strike past Vallés to restore the lead for Borussia Dortmund at 2-1.

Despite late efforts from Real Betis, including a close header from Diego Llorente cleared near the line and continued pressure from Abde down the left flank, the German defense held firm through three minutes of stoppage time to secure the victory.

With this result, Real Betis sits in the eleventh position of the Champions League standings with nine points after four matches. The top eight teams in the league phase advance directly to the round of 16, while clubs finishing from ninth to 24th enter a playoff round.

The match also marked a historic fixture for the Spanish club, which has historically struggled on German soil. Pellegrini's side will now look to regroup in the European competition as they aim to secure a finish within the top tier of the league table.
