Residents Raise Concerns Over Rat Sightings Near Liesingbach in Vienna

Local authorities have announced inspections and control measures following multiple reports of rodents near a bus station and a shopping center.

Several rat sightings along the Liesingbach stream in Vienna have sparked concern among local residents. The rodents have been observed near the Fabergasse bus station across from the Riverside shopping center in Breitenfurter Straße.

Neighbors noted that the animals can be heard clearly in the dry foliage. An on-site inspection confirmed the presence of multiple rodents in the vicinity of the bus stop, prompting queries to municipal departments regarding safety and response plans.

The MA 15 Health Service of the City of Vienna reported that it had received no direct formal notifications for that specific sector, though officials assumed that alerts had been routed through the city service application or local offices. Representatives emphasized that current data does not point to an overall citywide surge in the rat population.

City officials noted that the appearance of rodents in busy public locations is not unusual, as the animals actively search for food sources and new habitats. Discarded food waste, open waste receptacles, and scattered bird feed frequently attract them to urban environments.

Responsibility for pest control depends heavily on the specific property classification. While private landowners must manage infestations on private terrain, public grounds fall under the jurisdiction of municipal offices.

Along the Liesingbach area, the MA 45 Vienna Waters department holds operational authority. A spokesperson for MA 45 confirmed receiving a single call regarding the issue and announced that routine autumn inspection patrols along waterways would begin immediately.

As part of these scheduled sweeps, a contracted pest control specialist was dispatched to the location opposite the shopping center to assess conditions and deploy targeted interventions. Officials stated that visible results from the control measures are expected within a few days.
