Robson Green Stars in New Daytime Detective Drama The Northumbria Mysteries
The new BBC series pairs an Oxford-educated detective with an ex-convict to solve crimes along the scenic Northumberland coast.
Actor Robson Green has returned to television screens in a new crime drama titled The Northumbria Mysteries, which premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Set against the scenic landscape of the Northumberland countryside, the eight-part detective series follows an unlikely crime-solving partnership between an experienced officer and a former criminal.
The story centers on Oxford-educated Detective Inspector Rose O'Connell, played by Liz White, and Joe Ruby, an ex-convict and former gambler portrayed by Robson Green. Ruby now works as a volunteer tending to the grounds of a local priory under the supervision of Father David, played by Simon Callow. The plot kicks off when the body of a monk is discovered hastily buried in a remote section of the priory grounds.
Because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the discovery, DI O'Connell and her younger second-in-command, Detective Sergeant Raj Singh played by Gurjeet Singh, are assigned to lead the murder inquiry. To navigate the tricky investigation, O'Connell enlists Ruby, utilizing his unconventional insights from a past spent on the wrong side of the law. The production itself comes from Newcastle-based Lonesome Pine Productions.
Describing his character, Robson Green noted that Ruby is a fallible risk-taker who has lost everything due to past choices, despite possessing a good heart and a desire to do what is right. On the other side of the partnership, Liz White described her character as an evidence-based detective who has recently relocated to the region and maintains an understated confidence in pursuing justice.
The series has already drawn an enthusiastic response from viewers in the United Kingdom, with many binge-watching the initial episodes upon release. Reviewers have highlighted the program's rural culture-clash dynamic and witty charm, comparing its cozy atmosphere favorably to other lighthearted mystery programming.
Critics have also welcomed the show's tone, with publications such as The Telegraph awarding it four stars and praising its witty delivery, while The Guardian categorized it as a rural culture-clash cosy crime drama. Alongside Green and White, the cast features notable actors including Kevin Whately and Chris Gascoyne.
The first four episodes of the series debuted on BBC One and became available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, with the remaining episodes scheduled for release. International viewers outside the United Kingdom currently do not have direct broadcast or streaming access to the program.
