Actor Robson Green has returned to television screens with a brand-new crime drama titled The Northumbria Mysteries, which recently premiered its first four episodes in the United Kingdom. Set against the scenic and remote backdrop of the Northumberland countryside, the eight-part detective series follows an unusual investigative partnership as they work to solve a local murder.

The story centers on Joe Ruby, played by Green, who is an ex-convict volunteering at a local priory and attempting to turn his life around. He is joined by Oxford-educated Detective Inspector Rose O'Connell, portrayed by Liz White, who relies on an evidence-based approach and brings an ice-cool disposition to the job. The unlikely pair is rounded out by Detective Sergeant Raj Singh, played by Gurjeet Singh.

The plot of the detective series is set into motion when the body of a monk is discovered hastily buried within the remote grounds of the priory. To crack the case, DI O'Connell comes to rely on Joe Ruby and his unconventional insights, drawing from his past mistakes and experiences on the wrong side of the law. Father David, played by Simon Callow, watches over the priory grounds where Joe seeks forgiveness and tries to build a fresh start.

The character portrayed by Green has been described by the actor as a risk-taker and a gambler who possesses a good heart but has continually fallen victim to temptation. Speaking to the BBC, Green explained that his character is fallible and a charmer who ultimately lost everything due to the choices he made along the way. Meanwhile, White noted that her character, DI O'Connell, brings an understated confidence to her role and is entirely dedicated to achieving justice.

The series is produced by the Newcastle-based company Lonesome Pine Productions and features a supporting cast that includes Kevin Whately and Chris Gascoyne. Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the program on BBC One or stream the first four episodes on BBC iPlayer, with the remaining episodes scheduled to arrive soon. The show has not yet been made available for broadcast or streaming in the United States, Canada, or Australia.

Since its release, the detective series has drawn positive responses from both audiences and critics. Viewers have taken to social media to praise the stunning scenery, the humor, and the engaging plot, with some admitting to binge-watching the episodes back-to-back. Critical reception has been similarly encouraging, with reviewers highlighting the show's charm, wit, and its classification as a rural culture-clash cosy crime drama.
