Survival Thriller Whalefall Underperforms at Box Office During Opening Weekend
Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences, the 20th Century Studios release brought in $17.5 million globally against a $60 million production budget.
The survival thriller Whalefall struggled to find its footing at the box office during its opening weekend, grossing roughly $17.5 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $60 million. Released by 20th Century Studios and directed by Brian Duffield, the film opened well below expectations in North America and international markets despite largely favorable reviews from both critics and moviegoers.
Domestically, the PG-13 film earned between $7.8 million and $8 million across more than 3,000 theaters during the weekend, placing fourth on the box office charts. International markets contributed approximately $9.5 million to the global tally. The film faced stiff competition from other major new releases, including Paramount's Street Fighter adaptation and A24's documentary You Can See Everything, which likely contributed to its soft opening.
Adapted from Daniel Kraus's 20th-century novel, Whalefall stars Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a young man who dives off the coast of California to recover the remains of his estranged father, Mitt, played by Josh Brolin. During the dive, Jay is swallowed by an enormous sperm whale and must rely on the harsh survival lessons his father taught him while trapped inside with only about an hour of oxygen remaining. The narrative explores a complex, emotionally scarred father-son relationship through flashbacks and internal struggles.
Bringing the inside of a sperm whale to life required extensive practical effects and engineering. Director Brian Duffield collaborated with production designer Ramsey Avery, visual effects supervisor Guillaume Rocheron, and artists from Peter Jackson's Wētā Workshop to construct four different versions of the whale's forestomach. Because little research exists regarding the interior anatomy of sperm whales, the team studied other marine mammals and used dense upholstery foam coated in tinted silicone to replicate the visceral, muscular environment.
Despite the disappointing commercial start, audience reception offers a silver lining for the production. Whalefall holds a 72 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an audience score of approximately 80 percent and a B grade on CinemaScore. Industry observers note that positive word of mouth could help the survival thriller sustain its theatrical run in the coming weeks, though completely closing the gap with its production budget remains a challenging prospect.
Parent company Disney appears positioned to absorb the setback comfortably, with major releases like Avengers: Doomsday slated for later in December. For now, Whalefall is playing exclusively in theaters, with future streaming updates on Disney+ expected to be announced after the theatrical window concludes.
