Quentin Tarantino Details Future Projects, Stage Debut, and David Fincher Partnership
The filmmaker discussed his final movie script, his upcoming West End production, and the return of Cliff Booth on 'The Graham Norton Show.'
Quentin Tarantino revealed significant updates about his career during an appearance on the British talk show "The Graham Norton Show," confirming that he has finished writing the script for his intended tenth and final feature film while outlining a deliberate pause before directing it. Speaking alongside fellow couch guests Ellen DeGeneres, Colin Farrell, and Gemma Chan, the Oscar-winning filmmaker stated that he intends to mount a theatrical production in London and spend extended time with his family before deciding how to approach production on his cinematic farewell.
Before stepping behind the camera again, Tarantino plans to make his debut as a playwright with "The Popinjay Cavalier," an 1830-set swashbuckling comedy focused on caricature and farce. The stage production, presented in partnership between Sony Pictures and Sonia Friedman Productions, will run at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End and star Sacha Baron Cohen in his West End debut. Previews are scheduled to begin on February 23, ahead of an official premiere on March 18 and a run continuing through June 13. Tarantino developed the narrative from an initial screen concept before realizing it belonged on stage, and Sony has already secured the feature film rights.
Tarantino emphasized that he has no immediate rush to produce his final feature film until his theatrical work and personal priorities are addressed. "I wrote a script that I really like, but I want to do the play and see how I feel afterward," Tarantino said. "Then I want to go back, spend time with my family, enjoy life a bit, and only then see what I'll want to do." Now in his sixties, the director balances his routine between Los Angeles and Tel Aviv alongside his wife, Daniella Pick, with whom he shares two children and is expecting a third.
The filmmaker also addressed his long-standing declaration that he will retire after directing ten feature films, describing the target during the broadcast as a "slippery, greasy loophole." Tarantino previously scrapped "The Movie Critic," which had been conceived as his tenth directorial effort. Pre-production on that project stalled after Brad Pitt faced scheduling delays related to the film "F1," a pause that ultimately prompted Tarantino to reconsider whether that specific story should serve as his final project.
While his final directing credit remains on hold, Tarantino's cinematic universe is moving forward through a partnership with director David Fincher. Tarantino wrote the screenplay for "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth," a continuation centered on Brad Pitt's character from the 2019 film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." Tarantino offered high praise for his collaborator on the program, declaring, "He is my favorite director, other than myself." Tarantino has routinely praised Fincher's filmography, previously describing "Zodiac" and "The Social Network" as masterpieces and voicing admiration for "The Killer."
Tarantino noted that he initially considered setting the screenplay aside rather than directing it himself, but the project found new momentum when Pitt suggested hiring Fincher. "When Brad suggested, 'What if David did this?' I said, 'Wow, if you think he would be interested, yes,'" Tarantino recounted. "He read the script, got interested, we talked, and it was a perfect match." Pitt will reprise his role as stuntman Cliff Booth, a performance that originally earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The upcoming Netflix project takes place in 1977, eight years after the timeline of "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," depicting Booth in an era where stunt opportunities have declined. "He has a series of odd jobs he does every week, which helps pay the bills," Tarantino explained regarding the plot. "When people in the Hollywood industry end up crossing over to the wild side and get into trouble, Cliff is the kind of guy who can get them out." "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth" will debut in theaters and IMAX on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23.
