Tyler Perry and Whoopi Goldberg Move Forward With 'Sister Act 3'
The upcoming Disney+ sequel is underway as Perry's extensive film catalog expands across streaming platforms this November.
Producer Tyler Perry and actress Whoopi Goldberg are advancing development on the long-awaited comedy sequel "Sister Act 3" for Disney+, as the production moves forward to conclude the beloved movie franchise. Goldberg recently shared new details about the status of the project in an interview with W Magazine, describing the continuation as an important effort to bring the multi-decade cinematic story to a close following the passing of co-star Maggie Smith.
The third installment was officially commissioned by Disney in 2020 for its streaming platform, Disney+, attaching Perry as a producer alongside Goldberg, who is set to both produce and reprise her iconic lead role. Although Disney has yet to announce an official release date for the film, the project remains actively underway behind the scenes while navigating significant changes to the creative plans.
A key adjustment for the sequel followed the death of Dame Maggie Smith, who passed away in September 2024 at the age of 89. Smith famously portrayed the convent's Reverend Mother in the original movies opposite Goldberg. Goldberg had originally hoped to shoot the sequel prior to Smith's death, later noting that the production team undertook script revisions in late 2024 to respectfully address her absence and shape the narrative's conclusion.
Goldberg, who became the first Black performer to achieve an EGOT in 2002 after securing an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, reflected on the historical hurdles surrounding her casting throughout her Hollywood career. She explained that many of her defining parts were initially conceived for other actors, including the 1992 original "Sister Act," which had first been intended for Bette Midler before Goldberg stepped into the lead role of lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier.
The original 1992 film, which follows Goldberg's character going into hiding from mobsters inside a religious convent, remains a global cultural fixture. Goldberg noted that the film continues to air regularly in several foreign countries, sharing that Catholic nuns she meets while traveling internationally often mention having experienced their own real-life parallels to the movie's storyline.
Alongside Perry's continuing development work on high-profile studio projects, his wider directing and producing catalog is scheduled to receive renewed visibility across domestic streaming services this November. Prime Video is slated to add "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas" to its programming lineup on November 1, placing the 2013 holiday comedy into rotation for the start of the holiday season.
Additionally, free streaming platform Tubi is incorporating several of Perry's cinematic projects into its November schedule. Beginning November 1, Tubi viewers will have free streaming access to "Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black" and "Madea's Big Happy Family" within the service's Black Cinema category, highlighting the sustained presence of Perry's filmography across both subscription-based and ad-supported platforms.
