Christopher Lloyd Reflects on Michael J. Fox Joining Back to the Future
The actor shared his initial selfish reaction when Michael J. Fox replaced Eric Stoltz on the set of the 1985 sci-fi classic.
Actor Christopher Lloyd recently opened up about his initial reaction to learning that Michael J. Fox was replacing Eric Stoltz a few weeks into filming the 1985 science fiction classic "Back to the Future." Speaking with Fox for an interview ahead of the release of his upcoming memoir, "In My Own Time," Lloyd recalled the moment when filmmakers announced the sudden cast change during a late-night break in a shopping mall parking lot.
Lloyd admitted that the news caught him completely off guard and caused some initial annoyance. Having dedicated significant energy and effort over six weeks to establish his rhythm alongside Stoltz, Lloyd described his reaction as entirely selfish at the time. However, he quickly realized the impact of the change once Fox stepped onto the set.
Praising his costar, Lloyd highlighted the unique qualities that Fox brought to the iconic role of Marty McFly. He noted that Fox's spontaneity, humor, and intelligence completely transformed the dynamic of the production, ultimately turning the project into a massive success despite the turbulent start.
For his part, Fox recalled facing skepticism from crew members and fellow actors when he first arrived on set, as many viewed him primarily as a television actor rather than a movie star. Fox expressed gratitude for Lloyd's welcoming attitude during those challenging circumstances, noting that his costar never made him feel inferior and provided a vital anchor for the famous Doc and Marty relationship.
Reflecting on the infamous casting switch decades later, Fox addressed the mythology and rumors that have surrounded the change for forty years. In his own 2025 memoir, "Future Boy," he emphasized that there was no malicious backstabbing or conniving behavior involved in the decision, but rather a difficult situation where different people experienced the same event and ultimately moved forward.
Lloyd also commended Fox for his exceptional acting abilities and his collaborative approach to filmmaking. He praised Fox for immersing himself fully in his characters while consistently maintaining strong, respectful relationships with his fellow actors without letting personal processes interfere with the work of others.
