Terrence Boyd Hattrick Leads SV Waldhof Mannheim to 4-1 Victory
Substitute Terrence Boyd scored three late goals to help SV Waldhof Mannheim overcome an early deficit and defeat TSG 1899 Hoffenheim II.
Football club SV Waldhof Mannheim secured a convincing 4-1 home victory against the reserve team of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday. Trailing by a goal at halftime, Mannheim bounced back in the second half thanks to a stellar performance from substitute Terrence Boyd, who netted a hat trick in the closing stages of the match at the Carl-Benz-Stadion.
The match began with an early setback for the hosts. In the third minute, Jakov Dedić capitalized on a pass from Yasin Zor to score with a right-footed shot, giving Hoffenheim an early lead. The early goal left Mannheim visibly shaken, struggling with a lack of tempo and precision during the opening phase of the game.
As the first half progressed, Mannheim gradually found their footing. Oluwaseun Ogbemudia came close to equalizing in the 39th minute when his deflected shot struck the goalpost, followed closely by a header from Julian Rieckmann that missed the target following a corner kick. A brief weather interruption occurred in the 18th minute due to a sudden hail shower.
Mannheim returned from the halftime break with renewed energy. Vincent Thill missed an early chance by shooting over the crossbar in the 48th minute, but teammate Gonçalo Gregório leveled the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute with a well-taken goal that rewarded the hosts' dominant spell.
In the 72nd minute, Mannheim head coach made a decisive double substitution, sending on Terrence Boyd and Noah Sarenren Bazee to replace Julian Ulbricht and Lovis Bierschenk. The tactical shift paid immediate dividends as Hoffenheim attempted to push forward again.
Boyd put the hosts ahead in the 78th minute with a header. He then sealed the triumph by finishing a clinical counterattack in the 88th minute before capping off his hat trick with another header from a free kick deep into stoppage time in the 95th minute. The flurry of late goals brought the final score to 4-1.
The game took place under unique conditions before a crowd of 4,518 spectators. Due to a partial stadium closure stemming from crowd disturbances during an earlier DFB-Pokal match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Mannheim supporters were barred from their usual fan stand, and the club was prohibited from selling day tickets.
With this victory, which snapped a run of two consecutive defeats, Mannheim improved to 16 points, pulling even with Hoffenheim in the standings. Mannheim currently sits in seventh place due to a superior goal difference of 20 to 17, with both teams having recorded five wins this season.
Looking ahead, SV Waldhof Mannheim will travel to face 1. FC Saarbrücken in the regional southwest derby next Sunday, while Hoffenheim is scheduled to play FC Viktoria Köln a day earlier.
