India aims to sweep T20I series against New Zealand in Wellington
Captain Shreyas Iyer and the Indian squad look to secure the series victory on Tuesday despite facing injury concerns and challenging wind conditions.
India will head into the third T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand on Tuesday at Wellington with a 2-0 lead and a golden opportunity to claim a series victory on foreign soil under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer. Having outperformed expectations in both batting and bowling during the opening matches of the tour, the visiting team aims to wrap up the series early before heading into the remaining fixtures.
The upcoming fixture at Wellington introduces unique atmospheric challenges, notably severe northwest winds capable of heavily influencing ball movement. Bowling coach Morne Morkel described the venue as a different beast, noting that the strong gusts caused buildings to shake during the morning. Players from both sides will need to adapt quickly to the conditions, where the strategic use of the powerplay and accurate swing bowling could dictate the outcome.
India enters the match dealing with a few personnel setbacks. Wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan will miss his second consecutive match due to a low-grade right adductor strain sustained in the series opener at Christchurch. While Kishan is recovering well, the medical team has opted to keep him out as a precautionary measure, with young wicket-keeper Kumar Kushagra remaining with the squad as cover. Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to retain his place in the lineup following his debut appearance in the previous game.
New Zealand faces its own roster challenges ahead of the crucial encounter. Fast bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson have been ruled out due to injuries, depleting the hosts' pace attack. Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner remains a potent threat after claiming four wickets in the second T20I, where the hosts narrowly missed defending a competitive target of 180 runs.
In the previous encounter at Hagley Oval, India secured a thrilling four-wicket victory to register their 200th win in men's T20 Internationals. Chasing a target of 181, India recovered from a precarious 70 for five thanks to an unbeaten 69-run partnership between Tilak Varma, who finished with 47 not out, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who contributed a rapid 26 off 13 deliveries. The win established a new Indian record for the seventh wicket in the format.
Beyond the ongoing white-ball series, the Indian coaching staff has implemented a workload management strategy for the broader tour, which includes five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Test matches. Morkel stated that the team has a bulletproof plan in place to rotate bowlers and prepare backup options for the red-ball leg starting November 19. Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is among the contenders being evaluated for a potential Test debut based on conditions.
Meanwhile, the India A squad is currently engaged in a four-day unofficial Test against New Zealand A. After conceding a 204-run first-innings lead when New Zealand A posted 317 runs, India A reached 106 for two in their second innings at stumps on Sunday. Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings with an unbeaten 96-run partnership for the third wicket, leaving the visitors trailing by 98 runs with two days remaining in the match.
