India Secures Record-Breaking T20I Chase Against New Zealand
Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir powered India to a four-wicket victory in the first T20I in Christchurch on Thursday.
India achieved its highest-ever successful run chase in T20I cricket on Thursday, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the first match of the five-match series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Chasing a formidable target of 226, the visiting side reached 230 for 6 in 19.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
New Zealand, put in to bat after losing the toss under captain Mitchell Santner, posted 225 for 4 in their 20 overs, which marked their highest T20I total at home against India. Glenn Phillips led the charge for the hosts with an explosive, unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, while Finn Allen contributed 45 runs from 24 deliveries to establish a strong early momentum.
In response, India's opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma immediately applied pressure during the powerplay. Samson played a standout innings, earning player of the match honors after scoring 67 runs off 33 balls, featuring eight fours and four sixes. The opening partnership yielded 93 runs, giving the team a flying start despite significant ball movement and swing during the early stages.
Although New Zealand fought back in the middle overs by taking crucial wickets and slowing the run rate, captain Shreyas Iyer provided stability. Iyer contributed 42 runs from 28 balls, ensuring the scoreboard kept moving forward while navigating heavy outfield dew and tight bowling spells from the home side.
As the match entered its closing stages, Naman Dhir delivered a brilliant finishing performance. Dhir remained unbeaten with 42 runs off just 15 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of 280 to seal the victory with two balls to spare. His composure under pressure successfully countered the bowling efforts of Adam Milne, Matt Henry, and Nathan Smith.
Former cricketer Abhinav Mukund praised the team's resilience, noting that the squad traveled directly to New Zealand following a busy schedule in India without adequate rest. Mukund described the successful chase of over 220 runs under such conditions as an immense effort, highlighting the depth and adaptability of the touring squad.
With this victory, India surpassed its previous record run chase of 209, which was achieved against Australia in Visakhapatnam in 2023 and matched against New Zealand in Raipur earlier in 2026. Both teams will now look to adjust their bowling strategies and address fielding errors ahead of the second match of the series.
