India achieved its highest-ever T20I run chase by defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the first match of the series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. After winning the toss and choosing to field, the visiting Indian side successfully overhauled a colossal target of 226 runs with two balls to spare.

New Zealand set a formidable total of 225/4 after launching a fierce offensive in the latter stages of their innings. Glenn Phillips led the charge for the hosts with an unbeaten 82 off just 40 deliveries, while Bevon Jacobs contributed a quickfire 31 off 16 balls before being dismissed by a unique backheel run-out from Arshdeep Singh.

In response, India opened aggressively, with Sanju Samson hammering a rapid fifty off 23 deliveries. Samson shared an explosive 93-run partnership with Abhishek Sharma inside the opening six overs, keeping the visitors well ahead of the required rate during the initial powerplay.

The middle overs saw New Zealand fight back into the contest as Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner applied scoreboard pressure. Santner removed Samson for a brilliant 67 off 33 balls, and subsequent wickets left India needing substantial runs with only a few overs remaining in the match.

Naman Dhir emerged as the hero for India in the closing stages, playing a blistering, unbeaten knock of 42 runs from just 15 balls. Dhir maintained a striking composure under immense pressure, hitting five boundaries and two sixes without playing a single dot ball to steer his team across the finish line.

Dhir's heroic finish completed a remarkable chase that cemented his growing reputation as a reliable late-innings batsman. Across his recent appearances, the young player has accumulated 66 runs in 21 balls without being dismissed, striking at over 314.

The victory gives India an early lead in the bilateral series following their recent matches against the West Indies. Both teams will look ahead to the remaining fixtures as the tour continues in New Zealand.
