India defeats New Zealand by six wickets in third T20I
Abhishek Sharma smashed a blistering 113 off 38 balls to help India secure an unassailable 3-0 series lead in Wellington.
India defeated New Zealand by six wickets in the third Twenty20 International at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first under lights, setting up a dominant chase led by a record-breaking batting performance.
Batting first, New Zealand posted 198-3 in their allotted 20 overs. Daryl Mitchell anchored the innings with a T20-best unbeaten 89 off 52 deliveries, featuring five fours and five sixes. He shared an 86-run partnership for the second wicket with Finn Allen, who contributed 40 runs from 25 balls before being caught by Naman Dhir off Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Bevon Jacobs provided late acceleration for the hosts with an unbeaten 39 off 23 balls. Mitchell and Jacobs combined for an unbroken 75-run fourth-wicket partnership, adding 42 runs across the final four overs. However, accurate Indian bowling at the death restricted New Zealand to 52 runs from their last five overs.
In response, India chased down the target in just 13.2 overs, finishing at 198-4. Abhishek Sharma produced one of the most remarkable power-hitting displays in T20 history, blasting 113 runs off just 38 balls. His explosive innings included nine fours and eleven sixes, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Abhishek reached his half-century in just 15 balls—the third-fastest by an Indian batter in the format—and brought up his century in 35 deliveries. Reflecting on his approach, Abhishek stated, "I think the key was pretty simple. Me and Vaibhav were just going to enjoy ourselves for a bit in the power play."
Teenage opening partner Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided powerful support, racing to 45 off 19 deliveries with four boundaries and four maximums. The pair dismantled New Zealand's bowling attack to plunder a world-record 118 runs inside the six-over power play, before Sooryavanshi was caught in the deep by Daryl Mitchell off Matthew Fisher in the eighth inning over.
Kyle Jamieson eventually ended Abhishek's masterclass on the final delivery of the 10th over, inducing a miscued slower ball that Glenn Phillips pouched at deep mid-wicket. Despite the breakthrough, India easily crossed the finish line with 40 balls to spare, leaving the hosts searching for answers ahead of the remaining matches.
