Jio Platforms Surges Over 21% in Market Debut as Valuation Tops 12.5 Lakh Crore
The record-setting listing propelled parent company Reliance past Tata Group as India's most valuable corporate conglomerate.
Jio Platforms Limited made a historic debut on the Indian stock exchanges on Wednesday, with its shares listing at 1,358 rupees apiece—a premium of more than 21 percent over the initial public offering issue price of 1,119 rupees. The telecommunications and digital infrastructure giant, majority-owned by Reliance Industries, saw its market capitalization surpass 12.5 lakh crore rupees upon listing. The performance instantly positioned the firm as India's second-largest publicly traded enterprise behind its parent corporation and pushed it ahead of industry rival Bharti Airtel.
During trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange, the equity touched an early high of 1,374 rupees and later extended its valuation beyond 13 lakh crore rupees, climbing nearly 27 percent above its original offer price. This sharp rise lifted the combined valuation of the Reliance Group past 30 lakh crore rupees, overtaking the Tata Group's 25 lakh crore rupees to become the nation's most valuable conglomerate. Tata had held the top valuation ranking across most of the preceding decade.
The strong secondary market performance followed an unprecedented initial public offering that raised 30,213 crore rupees, representing the largest share sale in Indian corporate history. Institutional and retail demand heavily exceeded available allocations, driving overall bidding to roughly 22.2 times the offering. Qualified institutional buyers subscribed at 70.55 times their quota after exhausting their initial allotment within ten minutes. An earlier anchor allocation of 8,110 crore rupees drew over 2.5 lakh crore rupees in institutional bids, exceeding availability by more than thirtyfold.
Accounts of the offering's reception varied slightly across sources. Management noted the issue was fully subscribed in 95 minutes, whereas separate market reports recorded full subscription at 100 minutes. Similarly, while retail interest was cited in market reviews as approaching 14 million applications, company leadership confirmed over 13 million applications generating more than 7.5 lakh crore rupees in total demand. At its issue price, the company carried an initial valuation of approximately 10.3 lakh crore rupees, or 108 billion dollars.
Speaking at the market listing ceremony, the leadership team outlined the company's operational trajectory and long-term objectives. Managing Director Akash Ambani stated that the provider's homegrown network now serves more than 540 million customers, signaling intentions to expand beyond telecom infrastructure into artificial intelligence, cloud systems, and satellite connectivity. Director Anant Ambani highlighted the platform's social impact, observing in translated remarks that while Jio itself cannot be seen, it beats at the heart of every digital aspiration across the country.
Director Isha Ambani placed the transaction in historical context by contrasting the debut with Reliance's first public offering in 1977, which raised 2.82 crore rupees at a valuation of 10 crore rupees. She emphasized that Jio generated approximately 15.5 billion dollars in revenue and roughly 8 billion dollars in real earnings this year despite being only a decade old, adding that sustained financial success relies entirely on delivering tangible value to customers.
Major brokerage firms initiated coverage with optimistic ratings following the debut. Elara Capital issued a buy recommendation with a price target of 1,367 rupees, highlighting potential gains in average revenue per user and rapid expansion in fixed wireless broadband. Motilal Oswal established a buy rating with a 1,350-rupee target, projecting wireless revenue market share to reach 43.3 percent by fiscal year 2029. Nomura also advised purchasing the stock with a target of 1,340 rupees, pointing to the company's control of 60 percent of national data traffic as a primary catalyst for long-term growth.
