Juventus and Rennes Play to 2-2 Draw in Europa League Clash
The Italian side salvaged a point at home against a resilient French opponent after a late goal was overturned by VAR.
Juventus settled for a 2-2 draw against French side Stade Rennais during the third matchday of the UEFA Europa League group stage at the Allianz Stadium. Despite taking an early lead, the Bianconeri struggled to find consistency, leaving them with five points in the tournament and highlighting ongoing concerns regarding their overall form and tactical adjustments under manager Luciano Spalletti.
The match began brightly for the hosts. Just five minutes into the encounter, Nick Woltemade intercepted a pass between the lines and delivered a precise through ball to Zeki Çelik. The Turkish wing-back drove into the penalty area and finished calmly with a low, angled shot past goalkeeper Brice Samba to break the deadlock.
Rennes responded firmly and capitalized on defensive lapses from the Italian squad. In the 15th minute, Mahamadou Nagida initiated a fluid attacking sequence down the left flank, delivering a cross to the far post where Bryan Reynolds headed the ball across the face of goal. Mousa Al-Tamari reacted quickly to beat Federico Gatti from close range and level the score at 1-1.
The visitors maintained pressure as the first half progressed, forcing saves from goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and testing the Juventus defense. Just before halftime, following a corner kick, Nagida unleashed a powerful volley that struck the hand of Douglas Luiz inside the penalty box. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which Boulaye Dia converted by sending Vicario the wrong way to give Rennes a 2-1 lead at the break.
Trailing after halftime, Juventus struggled to assert control while Rennes continued to press forward. However, the momentum shifted after Spalletti introduced Nicolás González off the bench. In the 67th minute, following a free-kick delivered into the area, González redirected a header that made contact with Reynolds' arm. Another penalty was confirmed by VAR, and Woltemade confidently struck it down the middle to equalize for the hosts.
The closing stages of the game grew increasingly intense as both teams sought a winner. Woltemade came close on multiple occasions, and defender Jhon Lucumí thought he had secured a late victory in the 88th minute when he scored from a set-piece. However, following a VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to an offside position, leaving the score level at the final whistle.
With this result, Juventus earned a point toward direct qualification for the round of sixteen but left the field amid lingering questions from supporters. The team now turns its attention back to domestic fixtures as they prepare for upcoming away matches against Lecce and Genoa, followed by a home meeting against Napoli in the Italian Serie A.
