Juventus Hosts Rennes in Europa League Match Amid Domestic Pressures

The Italian side aims to maintain its strong European form at the Allianz Stadium as pressure mounts on manager Luciano Spalletti following recent league struggles.

Juventus returns to the Allianz Stadium on Thursday to face Rennes in the third round of the UEFA Europa League league phase. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:45 PM, with the sold-out venue reflecting strong fan enthusiasm despite the weekday afternoon timing. The Italian squad enters the fixture looking to build on two consecutive wins in the competition, while the French visitors arrive seeking to extend their undefeated run after securing a victory and a draw in their opening continental matches.

The match comes at a critical juncture for Juventus, which faces mounting scrutiny following a difficult domestic stretch. The team suffered a 3-0 home defeat against Lazio over the weekend, a result that exposed defensive disorganization and offensive sluggishness. These recent setbacks have fueled speculation regarding the future of manager Luciano Spalletti.

Addressing the team's current situation before the game, Juventus director Giovanni Carnevali emphasized the need for stability and patience. "The important thing is to give continuity; we have alternated good games with negative performances," Carnevali stated. Regarding the pressure on the coaching staff, he added, "The manager knows he has to work, the bench is hot, but that is part of the pressures that exist at Juve. He knows the critical issues and knows what needs to be done. In recent years, consistency has been lacking, and this has led to a major financial problem."

Despite domestic difficulties, Juventus has performed well in Europe. The club shares the distinction of having the tournament's best attack with Besiktas, having scored seven goals so far. Historically, both teams have met only twice previously, during the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup final, where the Italian side claimed the trophy with a 4-2 aggregate victory.

For Thursday's encounter, manager Luciano Spalletti has lined up his squad in a 3-4-1-2 formation. Guglielmo Vicario starts in goal, protected by a defensive trio of Federico Gatti, Bremer, and Lloyd Kelly. The midfield features Zeki Celik, Douglas Luiz, Teun Koopmeiners, and Andrea Cambiaso, with Weston McKennie operating behind the forward pairing of Randal Kolo Muani and Nick Woltemade.

On the opposing side, Rennes manager Bruno Haise deployed a 3-5-2 formation. Brice Samba starts in goal, behind a defense composed of Mohamed Kader Aït Boudlal, Charlie Cresswell, and Warmed Omari Rouault. The midfield includes Lorenz Assignon, Adrien Thomasson, Valentin Rongier, Mohamed Camara, and Mahamadou Nagida, with Arnaud Kalimuendo and Moussa Al-Taamari leading the attack.

In addition to established squad members, the fixture marks a milestone for young talent Antonio Stefano Merola. The 2007-born forward received his first official call-up to the Juventus senior squad, wearing the number 51 shirt. Merola, who has spent thirteen seasons in the youth ranks, was included by Spalletti following strong performances with the Next Gen team and the Italian youth national team.
