Monty Don Announces Departure from Gardeners' World After 23 Years
The renowned horticulturist and broadcaster has revealed he will step down from the BBC flagship show following a summer realization.
Horticulturist and broadcaster Monty Don has announced that the current season of Gardeners' World will be his last, bringing to a close a 23-year tenure hosting the beloved BBC program. Don first joined the show in 2003 as a presenter and Head Gardener, spending the last 16 years filming from his private garden, Longmeadow, in Herefordshire.
Reflecting on his decision in Gardeners' World Magazine, Don explained that the demanding nature of the role ultimately prompted his exit. While noting that his commute was remarkably short, he admitted that the job followed him constantly. 'When I go home I take the job with me, seven days a week, 24 hours a day,' he wrote. 'Then, one day this summer, I woke up and knew it was time to stop. Simple as that.'
Sharing the official news with viewers, Don emphasized that he is not retiring from television or writing entirely. Instead, he plans to focus on other creative endeavors, spend more time with his family, and continue exploring gardens around the world. 'There are programmes I want to make, books I want to write, family I want to spend more time with,' Don stated, adding that his enthusiasm for visiting gardens remains as keen as ever.
BBC executives expressed gratitude for Don's long-standing dedication and profound impact on viewers. Sharon Fisher, BBC Studios Series Editor for the program, praised his warmth, wisdom, and deep love of gardening, noting that his departure marks 'the end of a remarkable chapter in the programme's history.' BBC Chief Content Officer Kate Phillips also thanked him for opening up about personal struggles and highlighting the power of the natural world to improve mental health.
Throughout his time on the air, Don became a comforting and trusted presence for millions of gardeners in Britain and across the globe. He hosted approximately 700 episodes, offering seasonal advice, practical tips, and glimpses into his outdoor life alongside his dogs. BBC leadership confirmed that Don will continue presenting the show from Longmeadow through the end of the year and expressed optimism about collaborating on future projects.
Looking ahead, Don maintains a busy schedule outside of the weekly television format. As autumn sets in, the experienced gardener continues to share seasonal guidance with the public, including advice on sowing sweet peas early to ensure robust root systems and fragrant summer blooms. With new book projects and potential broadcasting ventures on the horizon, Don insists that a fresh chapter awaits.
