Second Crew Member Found Dead After French Fighter Jet Crash
Authorities confirmed two fatalities following the late-night training accident involving a Mirage 2000D in eastern France.
Search teams in eastern France have recovered the second crew member following the crash of a military fighter jet near Nancy, according to local authorities. The accident took place late Tuesday evening near the town of Rogéville as the aircraft was returning from a routine training mission.
The Metz prosecutor's office announced on Thursday that physical evidence gathered at the accident site confirmed two fatalities. While initial discoveries pointed to the death of the pilot, ongoing DNA testing remains necessary to officially verify the identities of both victims.
French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin formally identified the deceased crew members on Thursday evening. The individuals were identified as a 44-year-old pilot and a 27-year-old pilot trainee, both of whom were aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash.
The ill-fated aircraft, a Mirage 2000D supersonic strike fighter, had departed from the Nancy-Ochey air base. According to the base commander, the flight was part of a scheduled nighttime training exercise designed to prepare crews for tactical operations.
The Mirage 2000D is a twin-seat aircraft specifically engineered for precision ground-attack missions. The fleet was originally manufactured between 1993 and 2002 to serve the tactical needs of the French air force.
As of Thursday, the exact cause behind Tuesday night's crash remains entirely unknown. Military investigators continue to examine the wreckage and analyze flight data to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident near Rogéville.
