New Commander Takes Charge of Lauragais Gendarmerie Company in France
Squadron Leader Victor Normand officially assumed command of 200 gendarmes during a formal ceremony in Villefranche-de-Lauragais.
A formal military ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 7, in Villefranche-de-Lauragais, marking the official installation of Squadron Leader Victor Normand as the new head of the Lauragais gendarmerie company. Several dozen gendarmes in full ceremonial uniform gathered around the Général-de-Gaulle square for the event, drawing the attention of local residents and passersby.
Divisional General Thibaut Lagrange, who commands the gendarmerie groupings for the Occitanie region and the Haute-Garonne department, presided over the solemn ceremony. The event was attended by numerous civil and military authorities, including Toulouse Public Prosecutor David Charmatz and Muret Arrondissement Sub-Prefect Pascal Bagdian.
The traditional protocol of a command handover was strictly followed during the proceedings. The ceremony featured a color-guard presentation, a review of the troops, the handover of the company pennant, and a saber salute, performed before a large audience of local elected officials, mayors hosting local brigades, and delegations of flag bearers and veterans.
Following the outdoor ceremony, participants gathered at the central covered market of Villefranche-de-Lauragais, where General Lagrange reviewed the career of the 33-year-old officer. Prior to his new assignment, Normand led mobile gendarmerie units in Hyères in the Var department and Vouziers in the Ardennes, which the regional commander noted had faced high-intensity engagements.
General Lagrange emphasized several key priorities for the new commander, highlighting the absolute importance of supporting victims, particularly minors and those affected by domestic violence. He urged Normand to maintain a constant and visible gendarmerie presence in the field, combat drug trafficking relentlessly, and foster close relationships with local elected officials.
"Commander a company of gendarmerie is an exceptional adventure during which it will be necessary to make decisions and informed choices," General Lagrange told the new commander during his address. He reminded the officer to consult widely while maintaining his leadership authority and to remember that commitment is ultimately centered on the victims.
Meanwhile, discussions surrounding law enforcement structures often contrast civilian models with continental forces. In countries like France, Spain, and Italy, organizations such as the gendarmerie, the Guardia Civil, and the Carabinieri operate as part of the armed forces, providing specialized capabilities for maintaining public order during widespread civil unrest.
