Vivienne Jolie-Pitt legally drops her father's last name
The 18-year-old becomes the fourth child of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to officially remove their father's surname.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's 18-year-old daughter, Vivienne, has officially dropped her father's last name following a court ruling on Monday. A Los Angeles judge granted her petition to legally change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie during a hearing at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse.
Judge Virginia Keeny presided over the hearing, noting that because there were no objections, the name change petitions were approved. Vivienne's attorney, Peter Kenneth Levine, appeared remotely for the morning proceedings. Court paperwork confirmed that the decree was signed and filed, making the name change official.
Vivienne initially filed her paperwork in July, shortly after celebrating her 18th birthday alongside her twin brother, Knox. Court documents listed the reason for her legal filing as personal. Prior to the official ruling, she had already begun using her mother's last name professionally, such as when she was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the Playbill for the Broadway production of The Outsiders in May 2024.
With this legal update, Vivienne joins three of her siblings who have also removed Pitt from their surnames. Her older sister Shiloh was the first of the former couple's six children to file for the change in May 2024, with a judge granting the request that August. Their older siblings Zahara and Maddox also legally dropped their father's last name in subsequent months.
Among the remaining siblings, Vivienne's twin brother, Knox, omitted Pitt from his high school graduation diploma in June, though he has not yet filed a formal legal petition. Pax remains the only child among the six who continues to publicly use the hyphenated Jolie-Pitt surname.
The name changes occur in the wake of a prolonged and contentious family split between Jolie and Pitt. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 after two years of marriage and 12 years together, seeking primary custody of the children following an incident during a private flight from France to Los Angeles. Pitt was investigated over allegations related to the flight, but authorities filed no charges.
Although a judge declared the former couple legally single in 2019, their divorce proceedings continued for several more years before being finalized in December 2024. The former couple also remains involved in an ongoing legal battle regarding their French winery, Château Miraval.
