Warriors Defeat Nuggets Behind Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg's Standout Performance
Golden State secured its first victory of the season with a 134-114 win over Denver on Monday night at Ball Arena.
The Golden State Warriors secured their first victory of the young NBA season on Monday night, defeating the Denver Nuggets 134-114 at Ball Arena. Facing an 0-3 start, the Warriors deployed their fourth different starting lineup in four games, featuring Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, and Draymond Green.
Lendeborg led the charge for Golden State with a dominant performance, recording 31 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. The rookie's impressive night earned high praise from Stephen Curry, who described the first-year forward as "the full package." Warriors head coach Steve Kerr also lauded the rookie, calling his abilities "extremely rare" for a first-year player and confirming that he will be part of the team's closing lineup.
Per NBA statistics, Lendeborg became the first rookie since Larry Bird in the 1979-80 season to record at least 70 points, 30 rebounds, and 15 assists in his first four career games. The 24-year-old has posted back-to-back games with at least 26 points, helping steady the Warriors as they await the return of injured teammate Jimmy Butler.
While the Warriors celebrated an offensive explosion—shooting 22 of 44 from three-point range and out-rebounding Denver 45-32 despite a size disadvantage—the Nuggets were left searching for answers following an embarrassing home loss. Denver head coach David Adelman pointed directly to his team's defensive shortcomings rather than placing blame on Nikola Jokic, who finished with 19 points on 8-for-18 shooting.
"It's the defensive side. That's it, you know, and we have to do a better job in very simplistic ways," Adelman said after the game. The coach emphasized that the team lacked necessary physicality, allowing Golden State's perimeter offense to dictate the pace through small-small pick-and-roll situations.
The loss also heightened tensions between the Nuggets and their home crowd. Following a previous home game where fans booed the team during a sluggish start against the New Orleans Pelicans, Jokic doubled down on his post-game remarks regarding the crowd's reaction. "I'm sticking to what I said... I've played in much worse environments... I'm not used to fans booing their own team," Jokic stated, adding that he believes those expressing disapproval are "not the real fans."
As Denver prepares to face New Orleans again to seek a quick turnaround, the Warriors look to build momentum from their breakthrough win. Golden State will travel to face the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center on Wednesday, hoping their newly configured rotation and rising rookie can sustain their winning form.
