Activision and developer Infinity Ward have detailed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, setting an official release date of October 23, 2026, for PC and Xbox Series X|S. The latest installment in the long-running first-person shooter franchise centers on a fictional second Korean war triggered by a full-scale North Korean invasion, expanding the series into an escalating conflict that threatens to destabilize global security.

The single-player campaign structures its narrative around two distinct perspectives. Players follow Private Park Hyun-jun, a young South Korean soldier deployed alongside his squad to survive collapsing frontlines and reclaim occupied territory, alongside veteran series figure Captain John Price, an operative turned rogue who wages an unauthorized personal campaign from the shadows against the forces behind the invasion.

Spanning sixteen main missions, the storyline places players into a wide variety of combat scenarios across the globe. Alongside trench warfare in South Korea and an infiltration mission within North Korea, the campaign features close-quarters engagements in New York, a high-speed vehicle pursuit across Paris, an SAS night raid in Mumbai, and a major urban assault to liberate captured zones.

The campaign introduces expanded playstyles, including semi-open field environments such as the mission titled "Stranded." In this scenario, surviving troops operate behind enemy lines across an expansive snowy zone, gathering supplies, neutralizing target sites, and repairing field equipment to face hostile forces. Casual completion of the single-player narrative is estimated between eight and nine hours, supported by early access periods for digital pre-orders preceding the full rollout.

Multiplayer returns at launch with twelve new 6v6 maps situated in tactical environments worldwide, alongside larger scale battlegrounds designed for combined vehicular and infantry warfare. The studio implemented a overhauled weapon-first technology stack, unifying ballistics, physical handling, weapon recoil, stance modeling, and audio propagation to enhance combat precision while removing bullet bloom and visual uncertainty.

The tactical extraction mode DMZ also makes its return as a sandbox experience where solo players and squads infiltrate volatile exclusion zones. Operators are tasked with recovering advanced military hardware left in the war's aftermath, choosing between combat, negotiation, or betrayal before extracting under heavy pressure from escalating hostile patrols, which can deploy elite reinforcements if alerted.

Hardware and edition details confirm that PC players will require TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled to run the software. In addition to standard releases, a Vault Edition offers players exclusive access to perks such as the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, with post-launch content, tier skips, Call of Duty Points, and BlackCell features planned to integrate with the Season 1 Battle Pass cycle.
