Garena Launches Free Fire India Following Extended Regulatory Hiatus
The customized battle royale title arrives on mobile app stores with localized features, domestic server hosting, and new parental safeguards.
Garena has officially released Free Fire India on October 28, marking the return of the popular battle royale franchise to the Indian mobile market through a standalone application designed specifically for local users. The launch on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store concludes a years-long effort by the company to bring back the title after regulatory restrictions forced the removal of the original game in 2022.
The newly introduced edition retains the fast-paced competitive framework that defined the franchise, dropping up to 50 players onto an island where they must gather supplies, collect weapons, and outlast opponents. Matches can be played solo, in pairs, or in squads of four players. While the application is free to download, it includes optional in-app purchases. On the Google Play Store, the app is listed with a download size of 392 MB and holds a 12+ age rating.
Addressing regulatory scrutiny and player wellness, Garena integrated a suite of safety features into the Indian release to encourage responsible habits, especially among minors. Users under 18 years of age are required to obtain parental consent before playing. In addition, the game features strict playtime limitations, recurring notifications advising users to take breaks, and enforced spending caps on in-app transactions to prevent excessive financial purchases.
Data privacy and infrastructure adjustments form another key pillar of the release. Garena confirmed that Free Fire India is hosted on local servers situated within the country to ensure enhanced data protection compliance. The publisher stated that it formulated these technical operational frameworks after consulting with and incorporating feedback from relevant Indian government stakeholders during the preparation process.
The localized application also includes in-game campaigns tailored directly to the domestic audience. Among the initial offerings is a Diwali-themed seasonal event scheduled to run through November 15, giving players immediate access to customized content upon downloading. Furthermore, the company outlined intentions to support the Indian esports community while optimizing the application to function efficiently across a broad selection of budget and mid-range smartphones.
The official rollout comes after an extended period of uncertainty for the brand in South Asia. The original version of Free Fire was banned by the Indian government in February 2022 alongside dozens of other mobile applications over security concerns regarding software with ties to China. The prohibition dealt a significant blow to Garena, as India represented a vital territory where the title had amassed more than 40 million players.
Throughout the duration of the baseline game's ban, an alternative standalone version called Free Fire Max remained accessible to Indian gamers. Garena had launched that separate app globally in September 2021, providing updated graphics while retaining the original core mechanics, which allowed local players to continue engaging with the franchise on mobile devices.
Garena first publicized its intentions to launch a dedicated Indian edition in August 2023, naming former Indian national cricket captain MS Dhoni as the brand ambassador. Although the release was initially set for September 5, 2023, the developer unexpectedly postponed the launch shortly before the scheduled date without establishing an immediate revised timeline. The October 28 debut finally brings that delayed strategy to fruition.
