India secured a four-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first T20I of their five-match series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, the visiting team navigated pace-friendly conditions to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Led by captain Shreyas Iyer, the Indian squad featured a batting lineup including Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma. Despite limited preparation time and travel fatigue, the visitors relied on their batting depth to chase down the target and maintain their momentum following a 2-2 series draw against the West Indies at home.

The match marked a notable return for veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who rejoined the international setup after nearly four years away from the T20I format. Kumar bolstered an Indian bowling attack that also featured Arshdeep Singh and spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel, as the team sought to address persistent bowling concerns raised by the leadership.

New Zealand, captained by all-rounder Mitchell Santner, utilized a familiar squad from their recent T20 World Cup campaign. The hosts had to adjust to the absence of Rachin Ravindra, who was ruled out of the series after sustaining a shoulder dislocation, allowing veteran Devon Conway to move up the batting order alongside openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert.

Santner noted ahead of the series that both teams would need to adapt quickly to changing pitches across the country rather than relying solely on green seamers. New Zealand deployed a pace attack featuring Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, and Jacob Duffy, aiming to pressure the Indian batting lineup.

The ongoing series forms part of a broader tour celebrating a century of sporting ties between the two countries, which will also include a five-match ODI series and two Test matches. As the tour progresses across New Zealand venues, Iyer faces a crucial test of his captaincy following mixed results in previous away assignments.
