India secured a four-wicket victory against New Zealand in the opening match of the five-match T20I series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, successfully chasing down a target of 226 runs. Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first, leading to a high-scoring contest that marked India's highest successful run chase in T20I history.

New Zealand mounted an impressive batting performance to post 225/4 in their 20 overs, which stands as their highest T20I team score on home soil. Glenn Phillips led the charge with a blistering, unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, while Finn Allen contributed an explosive 45 at the top of the order. Despite picking up wickets through Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, and Axar Patel, the Indian bowling attack faced heavy punishment during the middle and death overs, particularly against Bhuvneshwar Kumar on his return to international cricket.

In response, India's innings got off to a roaring start during the Powerplay. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma capitalized on loose deliveries and heavy dew conditions, accumulating 94 runs in the first six overs. Abhishek departed for 29 off 12 balls, but Samson continued his dominant form by smashing 67 runs off 33 deliveries, including eight boundaries and four sixes.

The match shifted temporarily when New Zealand's spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell applied intense pressure in the middle overs. Santner removed Samson with a slow cutter, and a subsequent cluster of wickets—including Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma—stalled India's momentum and triggered a brief batting collapse.

Captain Shreyas Iyer stepped in to steady the innings with a calculated knock of 42 runs from 27 balls. Even after Iyer fell to Adam Milne late in the game, Naman Dhir delivered a fierce performance at the back end of the run chase. Dhir remained unbeaten on 42 off 15 balls, securing the historic win by hitting a six off Matt Henry with two balls to spare.

The victory gives India an early 1-0 lead in the bilateral series. Both teams will look ahead to the remaining fixtures of the tour, aiming to adjust their bowling strategies and fielding performances following a night dominated by aggressive batting displays on both sides.
