Viking secured its first-ever victory in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Sabah 4-1 at the SR-Bank Arena in Stavanger, Norway. The commanding win delivered a much-needed boost for the Norwegian side in the competition's league phase after a challenging start to their European campaign.

The match began with early setbacks for the hosts as Patrick Orphe Mbina struck first for Sabah in the 11th minute, giving the visiting team an early advantage. Despite controlling significant portions of possession, Viking struggled to break through until Erik Botheim capitalized on a pass from Kristoffer Haugen in the 27th minute to level the score at 1-1 before halftime.

The momentum shifted decisively in the second half. Zlatko Tripić put Viking ahead 2-1 in the 69th minute, shortly after missing an initial penalty opportunity. The visitors' task grew even more difficult when Aden McCarthy received a straight red card following a VAR review for a serious foul in the 77th minute, leaving Sabah to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Viking extended their lead in the 81st minute when Henrik Falchener scored off an assist from Tripić. Forward Erik Botheim sealed the historic 4-1 victory in stoppage time with his second goal of the night, converting a setup from Peter Christiansen to cap off a remarkable comeback on home soil.

For Botheim, the stellar performance highlights a remarkable resurgence. The Norwegian forward, who struggled during a prior spell with Italian club Salernitana where he scored only once in 39 appearances, has established himself as a central offensive pillar for Viking, tallying 16 goals in 30 total appearances this season.

The victory marks a milestone moment for Viking, a club managed by the unconventional duo of Morten Jensen and Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim. Appointed in 2020 as trailblazers of dual head coaching in Norway, Jensen and Aarsheim previously guided the team to their first domestic league title in 34 years and a notable 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich earlier in the tournament.

Entering the fixture positioned in the lower tier of the Champions League standings, Viking leveraged their home-field advantage and second-half resilience to capture all three points. The comprehensive win reshapes the team's trajectory in Europe and rewards the ambitious tactical structure established by their dual-manager leadership.
